In a unique way, Kurt Cobain is responsible for Lake Michigan-born, Cali-based punk artist Poel hitting his stride. After playing the late Nirvana singer as part of a Vegas-style tribute show, Poel pulled inspiration for his new punk project (he previously had recorded under Austin David).
One of his recent fiery singles again ties to the aforementioned icon; “Smells Like American Spirit”. The politically charged track mourns what our country has become (“When our fathers die, and our mothers cry, it don’t feel like home to me!”), through rage-filled vocals and distorted guitars. The lyrics maintain a bite (“are you marching to the beat of the bloodstained profiteers?”), even if the melody is hooky enough to help them go down smoothly.
