Cover Corner: Yara Lapidus – Elli (The Man Who Sold the World) (David Bowie)

Yara Lapidus is a multicultural artist, blending clashing genres, such as traditional Arabic music and Western pop, daring the courteous back-and-forth between jazz, indie rock, bossa nova, Mediterranean escapes, and Parisian-infused immersions. She is simply a daring artist.

And while covering the legend David Bowie is something so many artists have done, Lapidus is the first to ever adapt one of his songs into Arabic. But her approach to the song is more than a simple language change. Everything from Lapidus’ sultry delivery to the Spanish guitars and orchestral elements added give the song new life.

Produced by Bowie’s longtime bassist Gail Ann Dorsey, the track has a warmth to it that wasn’t there in the original, and the scope sounds more cinematic than ever. Check out this beautiful version of the song here (and feel free to compare it to the original).
