Though his style of folk/singer-songwriter style music would most closely garner comparisons to artists like Conor Oberst, Jason Isbell and Neil Young, Malachi McNeill has found himself sharing stages with artists ranging from emo-punks Red Jumpsuit Apparatus to country artists like Dustin Lynch. Raised in the mountains of Pennsylvania and now based in Southern California, McNeill has been preparing his debut album, and most recently shared his latest single from it, “All of My Friends.”
The track, originally started five years ago, was one McNeill recently came back to. Led by piano, the song hearkens more to the melodic pop rock of groups like The Fray and early Coldplay than the folk style music he generally writes. The results speak for themselves: the song is a warm, inviting inspired by McNeill’s time in California, and the people in his life. The chorus of “All of my friends live out loud” carries a hint of admiration mixed with envy, as McNeill realizes “maybe there’s something I’ve been missing.” It’s a “coming of age” style song, perfect for anyone who finds themselves still trying to figure out that secret that everyone else around you seems to know, but which will come with time.
