Hailing from rural Saskatchewan, Phil Andrew lived on a farm until he turned 20, when he moved to Vancouver and discovered his love of music. Even as his love of playing music grew, raising a family pulled him back out of the city and into Grand Prairie, Alberta. Still, the new setting did not stop him from writing and recording, and earlier this year he released his first track, “Same.”
The track has a cool mix of blues licks, a country shuffling rhythm, and a vocal approach that has the feel of 90’s alternative/pop rock. And while the easily memorable chorus of “Same shit, different day” is something anyone can relate to, there’s an underlying existential thread going through the song, with Andrew singing “The more I try to go to sleep, the more awake that I am meant to be,” seemingly a discovery of truths about oneself.
