Album Review: honestav – Sweet American Boy

Alternative singer-songwriter honestav is BACK with sophomore album, ‘Sweet American Boy’. Honestav was catapulted into the spotlight with his breakout single “I’d Rather Overdose”, and his growth as an artist from then to now is incredible. He’s known for his raw emotional vulnerability and his distinct blend of alternative, indie-folk, hip-hop and pop influences to create his unique sound. This album shares his unfiltered emotions behind the journey to his fast-rising fame.

If I’m being completely honest with everyone I hadn’t listened to honestav before this album came to me, but I’m a fan now! “Can’t Let Go” is SO good and will be added to my playlist the second it is out. The instrumentation of driving guitar and drums gets me every time. Also it’s such a relatable song. Just because things end, it doesn’t make it easy to forget the person. With the lyrics of “I can’t let go of you, even tho I want to” we really see this theme.

Another song that really stuck with me is “Erewhon” I was immediately intrigued by the title – it’s so LA, and the song fit that vibe exactly. “They hate my swag, I hate theirs too, and they all have the same tattoos” are incredible bars and scarily accurate.

Three of the songs off the sixteen track album were singles: “Bad Guy”, “Believe” and most recently “Crash First” featuring MGK. Without knowing that MGK was on this track at first in my head I went “this sounds a lot like MGK” and it was! When the guitar kicks in, in the second half of the song I was really taken into the vibe of it. “All I know is I don’t know how to give a fuck.” Truer words have not been spoken.

Overall this album is really great and I definitely recommend listening to it! If you want to see honestav live, you can! The Sweet American Boy tour starts early August so get your tickets while you can!

The new album is out now. Listen to it here.
