Premiere: David G. Smith – Broken…Open

Award-winning singer-songwriter David G. Smith has held a long, acclaimed career. His country-tinged folk and blues music has brought him to stages around the world. His songs are far from the light, breezy pop tunes that so often pass for folk music in today’s society. Smith is a writer in the vein of Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen; addressing deeper issues, both internal and external, through a soft-spoken poetic lens.

His latest album, Hero Street, releases this Friday, and today I’m excited to premiere the vivacious new focus track, “Broken…Open.” Guided by a spirited guitar lick, the song has an upbeat rhythm, while asking bigger questions about the nature of our existence. Smith has said about the track:

Cowriter Tom Favreau and I had a discussion about human suffering…. Must it be so necessary and what good purpose does it serve, if any? We figured that, at best, it was a slippery slope: that there was a fine line between self-discovery and self-destruction. The payoff? Finding out who we are and what really matters in this delicate blink of time called life.”

The song even pays lyrical homage to Leonard Cohen‘s “Anthem,” with Smith singing “Every time you break me / I can see a little more light.” Hopefully this song can bring a little more light to your day. Be the first to hear it prior to the album’s release right here:
