With so much pop music these days feeling like a glossy product meant for mindless party nights or TikTok collage soundtracks, finding artists that write music with the intention of connecting with their fans in a real, personal way can feel hard to find. Yet, when I first heard New York songwriter Alexa Kate‘s folk pop truffle “Good for Long”, I could tell there was something real there.
From the timbre of her soft, airy vocals, to the swelling, kaleidoscope of sonics building an atmosphere around her voice, this song felt carefully crafted with love and artistic intention. The anxiety at the heart of the song (“I’m too smart to know good things can’t stay good for long”); the pessimism we all feel when things are going well but we’re waiting for the other shoe to drop, is something we all feel. It’s the kind of songwriting that will speak to listeners and find Kate an adoring fan base that will stay with her.
