Banger of the Week: Some Gifts – Consumer Confidence is Shaken

Few would say that the economy is working well for the working man these days. But no one is shouting it to the heavens better than Los Angeles noise-rock trio Some Gifts.

There’s always something satisfying about discovering a new band in a live setting first. The other weekend, I caught Some Gifts set opening for Jr. Juggernaut at the Redwood Bar & Grill in Downtown LA, and there was a rabid ferocity to the band’s music I hadn’t heard in a while.

The group aren’t new – they’ve been kicking around for thirteen years. But their latest single, “Consumer Confidence is Shaken”, certainly had me shook on first listen. From the get-go, the macabre bass line and smacked-around drums built a chaotic energy, which explodes as the guitar and vocals come in with a vicious screed against the state of the system, which has “left us all here to drown.” With the chant of “What’s my market value?” burning this existential question into your brain at the end, you’ll find yourself questioning your place in the world, and ready to rage against it.

It’s a great reminder that Bangers can have brains (even as yours is being knocked around while head banging). Check out this blistering track by Some Gifts in our Bangers of the Week Playlist.
