Country: Thailand
I’ve long-believed that the best way to find out about the greatest underground music is to get recommendations from other musicians, and Amoeba Music’s video series What’s In My Bag has been a great place for finding out what the artists you like are listening to. When interviewing Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys), he pulled out a record by Khun Narin’s Electric Phin Band, a collective from Thailand that played psychedelic music based off of Thai and Laotian melodies.
The songs are transportive, creating the sensation of being in a tiny Thai bar in the 60’s or 70’s. The music is complex but melodic. There’s an improvisational feel to it that keeps the songs sounding fresh, even though to our Western ears, the music may run together. Check out a recorded live performance below, and find their music on Spotify.
