Forming in 2010, Mister Heavenly are an indie-rock super-group of sorts, as each member has a day job in another band (Man Man, Islands, Modest Mouse). On their latest album Boxing the Moonlight, the various influences of each member come through, creating an overall fun though sometimes inconsistent album of rock n’ roll.
Rollicking first single “Beat Down” is one of the album’s highlights. The song’s narrator pleads his case over plunking pianos before wailing “all I need now is a beat down” during the frenetic chorus. It’s the most high-energy tribute to self-masochism you’ll hear this year.
