Artist: Lee Fields and the Expressions
With the recent loss of Charles Bradley, there are not many soul-greats of the old guard left (and Bradley’s career was so recent it’s hard to even fit him in with that group). Lee Fields, who has been recording classic soul music since 1969, is thankfully still playing and recording with the band The Expressions, and his latest single “Time” is a finely crafted piece of soul songwriting.
From the organ intro to the emotive guitar solos, the Expressions prove themselves to be one of the best soul bands in the business. The horns perfectly weave through Field’s vocals. A tribute to a revitalizing love (“You made me feel so much younger, and time just stood still”), “Time” enriches with repeat listens, as you absorb the musicianship and tidal wave of emotion flooding forth.
