In honor of 4/20 tomorrow, it felt only appropriate to throwback to this misunderstood song which has become an anthem for stoners everywhere. Dash Rip Rock gained their following as a Southern roots rock band, earning respect as one of the pioneers of the “cowpunk” or country punk sound.
Recorded in the 90’s, “(Let’s Go) Smoke Some Pot”, a parody version of Danny and the Juniors‘ “At the Hop”, became a radio hit, and seemed to embrace the weed which is now legal in a number of states, though per the band’s Wikipedia page, the song was meant to make fun of the resurgence of Grateful Dead-style jam bands.
Let’s be honest – the stoners don’t care. This and Afroman‘s “Because I Got High” likely triple their stream counts on April 20th, much like St. Patrick’s Day helps pay for Flogging Molly‘s tour bus gas money for the year. It’s a song I’m sure many bands love to jam to, which may be one of its biggest ironies.
Feel free to listen to it now, or on Friday:
