A noise rock indie slog that explores time and discontent, Young Jesus’s “Deterritory” caught me by surprise. It comes out slow and thick and at a 1:50 shifts to a more intricate mathematical plucking that opens up into math/prog rock. It ascends and builds to then return from whence it came with it’s plodding rhythm and the highlight- the singers pained cry “If fire taught a lesson to the gods / If pain approaches empathy / If saints aren’t given voices to teach of burns / we’re led to blood periphery.” I have no idea what he means but enjoyed the ride the song took me on and will keep an open mind for their full length.
Young Jesus has some ferocity in their song writing and bravery in trying things that don’t go together initially. The band, on Saddle Creek, has just released a full length The Whole Thing is Just There. Check out the single (the first song off the album) and stick around for the rest.
