Jazz is and probably will always be the most innovative musical genre, and its groups like Butcher Brown who make this possible by continuing to push it forward and experiment with bringing in new sounds. The Richmond, VA incorporates hip hop, as well as elements of rock, funk and soul into its sound, and this wide breadth of range has gotten them spots opening for Kamasi Washington on tour, and the individual members gigs playing with artists ranging from Natalie Prass to Jack White to Black Thought.
One track by the group that enraptured my ear was “Tidal Wave”. What the band has called “a nod to the OGs Ronnie Laws and Black Moon“, the instrumental track smoothly and slyly seduces listeners with its mellow vibes, before expanding into a luscious, dreamy journey that retains just enough funk to keep the head bobbing.
