Comeback Alert: Tonic – To Be Loved

“If you could only see the way she loves me…”

It’s not hard to hear that line and instantly think of the 90’s. Tonic‘s massive 1996 hit was inescapable for years. The band had a great knack for swooning, melodic pop rock choruses, even as they showed off some muscular guitar rock underneath. They would go one to have one more minor hit with “You Wanted More”, which got some extra promo for being a part of the American Pie soundtrack, and then fell of the mainstream radar.

Not for the lack of more good songs. Their 2002 album Head on Straight was chock full of them. They released their last album of original material way back in 2010, with frontman Emerson Hart releasing some high-quality solo work in 2007, 2014 and 2019. Aside from a 2016 album reimagining songs from their debut, it’s been a long while since we’ve heard from the group. Well that long dry spell has finally ended.

The band have just comeback with their first new single in eleven years, and it has all the romantic heart and syrupy hooks to make it perfect return single to grab their fans’ ears again. Opening with a crisp, hard rock guitar riff and silky verses, it doesn’t take long for them to move into the soaring pre-chorus and open-hearted chorus (“All we want, all we want, is to be loved”).

Take a listen to the song here, and let’s hope it’s just the first taste of more new music from the group!
