When Kate Clover and her band came on the stage of the Troubadour during the Howie Pyro benefit show, it was easy to first note that the group had style. While the band wore suits, Clover had a leather jacket and leopard-print skirt; she melded 60’s girl group and garage rock styles in a way that was truly rock n’ roll. And when the Los Angeles-based artist broke into “Channel Zero”, she showed she and her band definitely had the musical chops to back up their look.
There is definitely a throwback-feel to “Channel Zero”, both in its classic retro rock sound, and it’s government conspiracy-inspired narrative (“CIA gave my baby LSD, told him it’s not mind control”). Clover wails like Karen O, but the band adds in some Go Gos’ bounce to the melody; a perfect blend of bad-ass and bubblegum.
With Clover’s debut album Bleed Your Heart Out coming out April 22nd, she is definitely one to watch, so start checking her music out in our Check This 2022 Playlist on Spotify or Apple! And if you’re in LA, see her live for her album release party on Wednesday, April 13th at the Moroccan Lounge. Tickets available here.
