Banger of the Week: The Native Howl – Thunderhead

Usually, a blue grass-style tune wouldn’t make it into one of our Banger posts. Enter The Native Howl.

I recently discovered the band via the YouTube show No Cover, and heard their original track “Thunderhead”, the epitome of their newly created genre “thrash grass”, the mixing of heavy thrash metal with blue grass instrumentation. I used to joke about creating a genre called country death metal, and this is about as close as we’ll get to that and I’m fine with it.

Featuring ferociously strummed acoustic guitars, speed-banjo and roaring vocals, the song is made to be the soundtrack to an out of control, whiskey soaked hoedown on the most humid day of the year. That is to say, it’s a dangerously joyous release of energy.

Whether the group wins No Cover remains to be seen, but they definitely deserve to be heard far and wide. Rock away to this thrash grass jam in our Bangers of the Week playlist on Spotify or Apple Music!
