World Watch: Abida Parveen

Country: Pakistan

While STRANGER THINGS has been making the most headlines for its influence on music in recent weeks, Disney+’s MS. MARVEL has certainly been trying. Whether it’s through choice uses of Bon Jovi or “Be My Baby”, the show’s music supervisor is certainly giving it their all. One of the best parts of the series though has been its use of Pakistani artists, with episode five’s inclusion of the beautiful “Tu Jhoom” by Abida Parveen and Naseebo Lal being particularly striking. The song is simply mesmerizing, thanks in part to the talents of both singers. Atmospheric and calming, with Parveen’s deeper voice playing well off Lal’s higher pitch. It’s soulful and thoughtful, and speaks to you even if you can’t understand the lyrics.

Parveen is a rarity in Sufi music, as there are rarely female lead performers. But, Parveen was able to study under her father, another prominent Pakistani singer, and later married an influential producer from Radio Pakistan, who also helped her in her career. This has allowed her to tour the world and become one of the most successful performers in that style of music.

Parveen’s way with a vocal melody also shines on on the track “Chaap Tilak”, a sparse, acoustic piano ballad that lets Parveen’s voice float and soar over the hushed instrumentation. It’s haunting and emotional, and creates a heartening mood, as the drums and chorus come in.
