New Music Friday: January 20, 2023

So this is going to be my last weekend in my 30’s (!!!), and I need a good soundtrack to closing out this decade of my life. Thankfully, the world is providing. For the partying I have in store, the new albums by Italian rockers Måneskin and Venice beach buzz band Strawberry Fuzz should provide the right amount of grime and sleaze. For the thoughtful moments, New Found Glory‘s new acoustic album (featuring a mix of new tunes and acoustic takes on classics) should do the trick, and include a good dash of nostalgia. We Are Scientists will keep my mood up with their brand of indie rock, and Siv Jakobsen‘s melancholic alt pop will ease me into 40.

As for the new singles that came out this week, there are some bangers! Fall Out Boy give us the first taste of their 8th album, The Bouncing Souls have two new tracks from their newly announced album, and Story of the Year rage on with the latest single from their next LP. Phoneboy‘s catchy new single definitely makes me feel youthful, while Nick Waterhouse‘s two new songs take me back to a distant era. And you can never go wrong with the timeless sound of Superchunk, blasting back with new single “Everything Hurts”.

Ruston Kelly and City and Colour‘s music always give me the feels, so I’ll be getting all emo listening to their new songs. More surprisingly is Noel Gallagher‘s latest song, which is pretty toned down for him. New singles by Lucero (my favorite off their new album), Dave Hause and The National are joining these fine tracks for heart-on-your-sleeve rock. And I know that’s a lot of male energy there, but to balance that, we have three new songs by the beloved boygenius (Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker) and one by Arlo Parks.

As if to pile on the goodness, there’s also new tunes from recent Banger artist Algiers, Bo Milli, McKinley Dixon, Metallica, DMA’s, Fruit Bats, The Luka State and Rose’s Pawn Shop. Artists we’re spinning here for the first time include Willie Shaw, Podge Lane, Good Bison, LOTEC, VNXI, Savoir Faire, Karen Jonas and Can’t Swim.

Listen to all of these and more in our New Music Friday Playlist on Spotify or Apple Music!
