Toronto-based Amy Gabba’s ska/punk project Amy Gabba & The Almost Famous has been kicking around for a few years, having dropped an EP back in 2019, and a number of singles since then. While Gabba merges a number of influences into her songs, the love of classic ska/ska-punk/pop-punk comes through mightily on her upcoming sophomore album Screaming at the Top of My Lungs, and the kick ass single “Punching Underwater”.
“And it’s getting even harder/to hold my head high/Up above the raging flood/looks like we’re going under” Gabba belts with her powerful pipes as chugging guitars and fast-paced drums give the track its bounce. While Gabba sings better than most modern pop stars, she delivers her lyrics about struggling against the forces working against you with an always relatable tenor. A truly Warped Tour-worthy jam meant to get audiences singing along in a crowd or in their car, it will hopefully gain some traction as Gabba tours the states this summer!
