Any fan of 60’s psychedelic pop knows Strawberry Alarm Clock. The group’s 1967 album Incense and Peppermints had a hit with the title track, and would become a standard of that scene and genre. Theirs was the sound of the swingin’ sixties, when the influence of eastern music crept into western pop. Most of the bands from that era have long since disappeared into the ether and retired.
Well this may surprise you, but Strawberry Alarm Clock are still around, and earlier this year, they released a brand new album! So what does a fifty-year old band of 60’s psychedelic pop rockers sound like in 2026?
Lovely. They sound lovely.
Just take a listen to the swooning single “Since You Have Gone Away.” A simple song of love and longing, the track has lush, cascading orchestral arrangements that that beautifully swaddle the pristine, lightly melancholic vocals. If Brian Wilson were still here with us, I feel like it’s the type of song he would embrace and let take him back to a bygone era.
So welcome back these rockers from a bygone era, and take a listen to this excellent modern nugget from them here.
