Artist: King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard
Song: Rattlesnake
Genre: Psychedelic, rock, art rock
Things are getting interesting down under. Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard are bringing psychedelic strangeness back into modern rock. And they are bringing it quickly, having already released two albums this year and ten overall. Released in February, Flying Microtonal Banana contains the nearly-eight minute long hypnotic highlight “Rattlesnake”.
Beginning with a duo of drum beats and a trippy surf guitar line, singer Stu Mackenzie enters the song with a cultish, digitized chant of “rattlesnake” on repeat. A thrumming base line and twinkling piano interruptions come in at various times, all to add to the murky atmosphere. It’s dark, funny, and will unite fans of metal, prog, and stoner rock, while not alienating music lovers who want to get things weird at a party.
