Cover Corner: Malia J – Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana)

In what will probably become ones of the biggest cover songs of the year, Hawaiian-born singer/songwriter Malia J‘s haunting cover of Nirvana‘s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is deserving of all the attention it’s about to get. Given prime placement as the soundtrack to the opening titles of Marvel’s Black Widow, Malia finds a ghostly melancholy in the grunge landmark.

Malia J has made a name for herself as a phenomenal cover artists, winning a Clio for her cover of “For What It’s Worth”, and also tackling songs like Tears for Fears‘ “Shout” and the Louis Armstrong classic “What a Wonderful World”. But not to be pigeonholed, her most recent EP also features original songs she composed.

But, sometimes a cover is a great way to get your foot in the door, and for Malia J, her take on Nirvana is going to blow the door wide open for her. Check it out below!
