Cover Corner: The Linda Lindas – Tonite (The Go-Go’s)

Young punks The Linda Linda‘s have been making waves since their viral library performance of their song “Racist Sexist Boy”. The band has released their debut album on Epitaph, played late night shows, headlined The Troubadour, and this Fall will be opening for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs on tour. Not bad for four girls who still aren’t of drinking age.

Starting out as a cover band, the group often covered songs by one of their biggest inspirations, the 80’s super-stars The Go-Go’s. Well, now to play tribute to this influence, the band has recorded a cover of the original all-girl pop-punk group’s song “Tonite”.

Raw and stripped to the bare essentials, The Linda Lindas‘ cover has a fitting dark tone for the rebellious track. Hitting just a slightly bit harder than The Go-Go’s original, the young band’s cover isn’t looking to transform the song as much as it is an introduction to their younger fans who may have never listened to the original before. And if it helps covert any Gen-Z music lovers into Go-Go’s fans, then I’d say it’s a success.
