Spooky season may be officially over, but there’s no reason you can’t still listen to some spookier music (at least to fend off the coming onslaught of holiday music). If you’re still up for some darker tunes, then Vision Video would be a good option for you. The Athens, Georgia quartet have mastered creating moody, post-punk music with wicked pop-leanings, conjuring up inspirations like The Cure, The Smiths and more recent acts like Ghost. A great example of their sound is the melodic, mood-bomb title track from their most recent album Haunted Hours.
About the inspiration for the track, songwriter/guitarist Dusty Gannon has said:
The inspiration for ‘Haunted Hours’ came late one night when I had posted a TikTok video where I was talking about my love for the band The Cure. One of our fans, Heather, had commented about how her late husband and her used to really love The Cure, so I asked her about him. His name was Ben and they were very much in love. When she suddenly lost him, her life was shattered and she was forced to constantly live with reminders of him.”
From the new wave guitars to the dramatic vocal stylings that slather the song with a sticky sweetness that fits perfectly with the mid tempo beat and swooning chorus, “Haunted Hours” sounds like a cut that could have ruled Britain in the 80’s. We’re still lucky to have it with us today.
