New Music Friday: May 12, 2023

It’s crazy times here in Los Angeles. The WGA strike is entering its second week, and musicians like Tom Morello and Imagine Dragons have been performing at the picket lines in support. As I am not WGA (yet), I am not on strike and free to continue to bring all of you premium music content.

And you should be content with this week’s content, as there’s a new album from upstart pop-punks Hot Mulligan which should fire up anyone fighting the powers that be. Another nu-school pop-punk group with a new EP out today is girlfriends, and we’re also captivated by the EP from soul-rock group Lexi Noise. And we have a new full-length from the great Pete Francis to enjoy.

If you want some other quality noise, you should embrace the swaggering new single from Queens of the Stone Age that dropped today. Classic rockers Pretenders have a brand spanking new song out that easily reminds us why they’ve become the legends they are, and if Sincere Engineer keeps releasing great songs like their new one, they’ll certainly last as long as Pretenders in this industry. And we’re still loving all the music The Dead Bolts keep releasing, and the latest by Nothing But Thieves is them at their melodic best.

Ben Harper and has the second single out from his next one, and Jenny Lewis has us riled up with her latest “giddy up”. Indie greats like Arlo Parks, Tash Sultana, G Flip and Local Natives all dropped new tracks this week, and skate punk veterans Diesel Boy have made their long-awaited return with their first new single in a whole lotta years. And if you’re feeling the punk energy, Codefendants, Teenage Wrist, Alexx Bean and Sweet Gloom both have fresh offerings for you today. And let’s be real; everyone loves Janelle Monáe, and we’re no exception. We got her latest track.

Some regulars joining us again are Little Hurt, Jean Dawson, Trever Keith, Night Spins, Dimitra Korri and Portugal. The Man. And it wouldn’t be an Indy Review NMF without introducing you to some quality new acts. Today, we want you to friendly with Dead Bars, Jackie Lipson, Juno Rucker, Jessie Wagner, Lone Wolf, Jack, Aviv, My Name is Ian, Sail Cassady, Binoy, Island of Love and The Burma.

Get listening to all of these tunes and more in our New Music Friday Playlist!
