New Music Friday: February 24, 2023

If last week seemed a bit lighter with the new releases, it’s because it was prepping us for the deluge of must-hear albums out today. The first comes from animated alternative giants Gorillaz, who continue to surprise with each new album. I’m always excited for a new Lucero album (and you can read my review of it here), so of course their new one will be streamed multiple times. Two recent Banger of the Week artists, Algiers and Morning Fuzz, have new albums out today, and east coast ska group The Abruptors have their latest album ready to skank to.

While I wouldn’t claim to be the biggest fan of synth pop, somehow CHVRCHES always hit a chord with me, so happy to welcome them back with their new single. Jason Isbell on the other hand is right up my alley, so it’s exciting to get the latest single from him with an album announcement. Same can be said for The Bouncing Souls, who were the first band I ever saw live at my first concert, Warped Tour 2001. Unknown Mortal Orchestra just earned their first gold record recently, and now have a new song from their upcoming album out. Ska legends Fishbone have a new track off a cool new compilation, and rapper Atmosphere has never sounded better than on his new jam.

Much-hyped nu-school pop punk group Meet Me @ the Altar dropped their first song of 2023 this week, and one of my favorite classic pop punk bands, Midtown, has released a Lagwagon cover as part of an upcoming covers EP. Samiam and Andrew McMahon have dropped new singles from their upcoming releases, and World Watch darlings Band-Maid are back with a new track. We also have returns from acts like Ruston Kelly, Sad Boys Club, The Band Camino, Nanna, The National, Brian Dunne, Beyond the Lamplight, Nicole Sanzio, Mystee and a new single from Manchester Orchestra!

Artists joining our list for the first time this week are Jeremy Facknitz, The Franklin Electric, Setting Sun, The Backfires, Peter Manheim, Babygirl, Militarie Gun, Claire Guerreso, Meg Smith, Versus the World, Ricky Byrd, Debt Cemetery, Gunnar, Love You Later and with an amazing song about the real Cocaine Bear, Yarn.

Listen to all of these new tunes and more in our New Music Friday Playlist on Spotify or Apple Music!
